KATHMANDU, April 9: Kathmandu District Court on Thursday has sent the two accused in the Ranibari murder case into judicial custody.

A bench of Judge Rajesh Kumar Kafle ordered to send the alleged contract killers, Manaraj Gurung of Dolakha and Pramesh Chauhan of Ramechhap, into judicial custody.

Although Gurung and Chauhan have denied the charges, Judge Kafle issued the order on the basis of witness statements.Twelve years after the crime, police had arrested Gurung and Chauhan last month in the charge of killing Engineer Hemant Shrestha and his wife Anjali, who were living in a rented flat of Geeta Khadka at Ranibari, Kathmandu.

Kathmandu District Court has conducted closed-door hearing for the first time in a murder case as proposed by the police and Kathmandu District Attorney keeping in mind the plight of the family of the victims, security of witnesses and fearing possible loss or destruction of evidences.

Following investigations spanning more than a decade, CIB of Nepal Police uncovered the mystery surrounding the killing of a couple at Ranibari with a sharp khukuri in 2002.

The people who hired the alleged killers are said to be hiding abroad and living in disguise.
