Quake killed 57, displaced 56,000 in Eastern region

DHANKUTA, May 23: The catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake of April 25 and the following aftershocks have displaced 56,670 people in Eastern Development Region (EDR) of Nepal.

According to the information provided by Eastern Regional Administrator’s Office, the quake damaged around 20,870 buildings including those belonging to the government and ordinary people in the eastern region causing displacement of such a large number of people.


Among the total destroyed buildings, 229 belonged to the government while 20,641 were privately-owned. Similarly, the quake caused partial damages to 3,287 government buildings and 42,191 privately-owned ones.




Okhaldunga district of the region suffered the most damage, according to the data provided by Eastern Regional Office at Dhankuta. As many as 10,031 houses collapsed while 10,593 suffered partial damage in the district alone.



Similarly, 1,414 houses in Bhojpur district, 1,116 in Sankhuwasabha, 51 in Taplejung, 25 in Panchthar, 316 in Ilam, and 62 in Jhapa were destroyed under the jolts of the earthquake and strong aftershocks.

Likewise, the quake destroyed 210 houses in Dhankuta while causing damages to 2,456 houses. A total of 182 houses in Sunsari suffered partial damage and four were completely destroyed. Likewise, 2,505 houses in Solukhumbu were destroyed while 6,176 suffered damage. Similarly, 2,110 houses were destroyed in Khotang, and 4,986 suffered partial damage, according to the Eastern Regional Office.



Partial damage to 7,490 houses was recorded in Udayapur while 95 houses were completely destroyed. Similarly, 87 houses in Siraha, 103 in Saptari, and 50 in Morang have been partially damaged.



Fifty-seven people died in the deadly earthquake in the eastern region while 292 were injured.



According to Kali Prasad Parajuli, joint regional head of the Eastern Regional Administrator’s Office, various government and non-government agencies including District Disaster Relief Committee have been distributing relief materials to the quake victims.



Around 30,000 tarpaulins, 8,000 mattresses, and Rs 300 million in cash has so far been distributed, according to Parajuli. Apart from these, food items and cloths are being distributed at present.
