KATHMANDU, June 7: World Environment Day was celebrated at Patan Durbar Square by organizing a program called “Promoting Herbal Garden in School” last Tuesday.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), together with Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA), and Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, set up an herbal garden at Rani Pokhari of Mangal Bazaar in Patan Durbar Square. The garden will be taken care by D-rope, a local youth organization.[break]

This campaign was launched in Nepal on World Environment Day 2010, which teaches children about the usefulness of commonly available and frequently used herbal plants. The campaign encourages people to preserve herbs and protect them for future generations.

Private and Boarding Schools Organization of Nepal (PABSON) is helping spread the word at schools throughout Nepal by its network.

Speaking at the event, Dr. T B Shrestha, Nepal’s well-known biodiversity expert, said, “Everybody should know about the values of herbs and put in their efforts to preserve them.”

Three different schools of Lalitpur were honored with certificates for being mentor schools. There was also screenings on the same topic.

Also, Dabur Nepal provided ECCA two herbal kits with the same intention of promoting herbal gardens in schools.

The program was organized to make people aware about medicinal plants by showing how they contribute to healthcare, generate local economies, and help conserve ecosystems.

“It’s hoped that the activity will generate interest among the general public and inspire them to become more involved in conserving these resources for future generations,” said Sushila Khadgi, one of the representatives from ECCA.
