Poll-centric security plan in Regmi's district Palpa

PALPA, Oct 28: The government has tightened security in Palpa to preempt any attempt by the forces opposed to the Constituent Assembly election to disrupt the November 19 polls in the home district of three key state figures, including Chairman of Interim Government Khila Raj Regmi.



Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire and the Nepal Police IGP Kuber Singh Rana also hail from Palpa.[break]



According to Chief District Officer Shiva Raj Joshi, the groups opposing the election might target Palpa merely for publicity.

´´We are alert as anti-election groups might be trying to make a big issue out of minor incidents in the district,” said CDO Joshi.

Chairman Regmi´s ancestral home is at Pokharathok whereas Minister Ghimire and IGP Rana hail from Bandi Pokhara and Bougha Gumha respectively.

The Armed Police Force (APF) is shortly arriving in Palpa additional security in the district.



Though the government has not categorized Palpa among the vulnerable places, the local administration has asked for special security arrangement here.

The District Administration Office is implementing a security plan in coordination with the Nepal Army, the police forces and the National Investigation Department.



To evaluate the prevailing law and order situation in the run up to the election, a special monitoring team led by the regional administrator has arrived here earlier on Sunday.

The team deployed from the Western Development Region is holding interactions with the representatives of local authorities as well as civil society members on election environment.



Meanwhile, a highly placed security sources have claimed that special security plan in the district headquarter Tansen Bazar includes close observation of the new faces in the town.



“The police have asked landlords to keep the documents of their tenants whereas urgent searches in people´s houses can also be performed if need be,” the source added.

In a similar operation, the Palpa Police a week ago had raided the cinema hall and hotels, in Tansen Bazar. The security personnel have also appealed general public to inform to the nearest police unit if they find any doubtful people and activities in their surroundings.



Similarly, a quick response team is in stand-by position. Apart from this, separate patrolling teams for day time and night have been formed.



More candidates demand security



As the date of election draws near, candidates of major political parties have started demanding police protection.

Till now, Palpa´s constituency-1 candidates of the CPN-UML and the UCPN (Maoist) have security guards.



Likewise, Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML candidate from constituency-2 have demanded police protection.



The police have arrested a person with a pistol loaded with eight rounds of bullet from Tansen municipality-9 on Monday.

Tipped off by the locals, police had nabbed 29-years-old Ranjeet Chaudhary.
