BIRGUNJ, Aug 24: A policeman was killed and two protesters injured in an exchange of fires at Amlekhgunj, Bara, on Monday evening.

The clash ensued after the police tried to use force to open the highway blocked by the protesting stone crushers and entrepreneurs.

Policeman Sanjeev Verma received a bullet and succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment at Narayani Sub-regional Hospital in Birgunj.

Police suspect that someone from the mass might have shot at the police with a homemade pistol. The area remained tense after the incident.

Stone crushers and the entrepreneurs had been obstructing the highway protesting a hike in tax on export of crushed stones to India.

Police fired several rounds in the air to disperse the agitators. Just a few hours before, police had baton-charged the protestors and opened the highway.

Meanwhile, police also used force to remove the blockade set up by stone crushers at Hetauda of Makwanpur and Nijgad of Bara.
