KATHMANDU, May 31: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal on Tuesday said he was ready to step down as per the May 29 five-point deal and urged other parties, particularly the opposition, to take the initiative for forming a national consensus government.

The prime minister, however, did not say when he would step down, indicating that he would not resign unless there is a clear alternative to his government, so as not to see a repeat of the situation the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government ended up in. [break]

Nepal resigned in June last year though the coalition had a majority, and the country could not get a new prime minister for another seven months.

"The May 28 deal on forming a national consensus government is a matter of happiness for me. I will take initiatives to form a national consensus government, in my capacity as prime minister and chairman of the CPN-UML. I appeal for a constructive role by the responsible parties, mainly the main opposition Nepali Congress, toward forming a national consensus government," the prime minister said in a televised address to the nation Tuesday.

The prime minister also asked party leaders not to interpret the five-point deal only to their own respective advantage. "The deal must be implemented in order to conclude the peace process and constitution writing and create a basis for forming a new consensus government," the prime minister said.

Admitting that the political parties and his government had failed to meet the people´s aspiration for a new constitution and completion of the peace process, the prime minister, in his capacity as prime minister of the country and on behalf of all political parties, apologized before the people for failing to deliver on either of these fronts.

His government came to power in February, with the main responsibilities of completing the peace process and drafting the constitution.
