PM leaving for Turkey

KATHMANDU, May 6: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal is leaving for Istanbul, Turkey, on Friday to participate in the Fourth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries that begins from Monday. Prime Minister Khanal will lead a delegation of nearly two and half dozen members.



Twelve delegation members, including Prime Minister Khanal, his spouse Ravi Laxmee Chitrakar and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Upendra Yadav will leave for Turkey on Friday. Others will leave for Turkey on Saturday.[break]

 

Nepal currently chairs the Global Coordination Bureau of the LDCs that has a total 48 member countries. The prime minister is scheduled to address the five-day conference in the capacity of the chair of LDCs.



Sources said the prime minister´s foreign relation advisor Milan Raj Tuladhar, press advisor Surya Thapa, Minister for Education Ganga Lal Tuladhar, Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Foreign Secretary Madan Kumar Bhattarai, Chief of Protocol Mukti Nath Bhatta, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Rudra Nepal, Vice-chairman of National Planning Commission Dinesh Chandra Devkota and two lawmakers are among those accompanying the prime minister.



According to a press statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Nepali ambassador to United Nations and Geneva and Nepalese Ambassador in Islamabad, who is also accredited to the Republic of Turkey, will also join the delegation.



Sources said the government will bear the expense of only a dozen members of the delegation. Turkey government will bear the total expense of six members including Prime Minister Khanal.



Sources said representatives of private sectors, lawmakers and civil society are also taking part in the LDC conference for the first time in the Istanbul conference.
