KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has pledged to transfer power to a democratically elected government within the next six months.

Addressing heads of diplomatic missions and resident ambassadors at Singha Durbar on Friday, Karki said her government’s main focus is on ensuring fair and peaceful elections.

“I have been entrusted with the responsibility of the prime minister not in the capacity of any political party, but in the interest of safeguarding the constitution and democracy,” she said. “My first priority is conducting fair elections.”

Karki said preparations for the upcoming polls are underway, adding that she has directed the Election Commission to ensure the process is fair, transparent, and inclusive.

She also said the government is studying the feasibility of an “external voting system” to allow Nepali citizens temporarily living abroad to exercise their voting rights. “We are gradually working to realize the principle of universal suffrage,” she added.

The prime minister emphasized that international observation will be crucial in maintaining the credibility and transparency of the elections.

During the meeting, she also briefed diplomats on Nepal’s foreign policy priorities, regional relations, and internal initiatives.

Karki also informed that a judicial inquiry commission has been formed to investigate the violent incidents that took place during the Gen Z movement. “The commission will conduct a fair and transparent investigation,” she said, adding that preparations are also underway to begin impartial investigations into corruption cases.
