KATHMANDU, Feb 12: Youth Peasants´ Federation Nepal (YPFN) held a press conference in the capital on February 11, 2010 to draw the attention of government to safeguard the rights of peasants in the new constitution.

Nagendra Khadka chairperson of YPFN said, “Although 66.7 percent of Nepalis depend on agriculture, the government seems to be reluctant to grant rights to peasants.”

Khadka futher added that the government needed to provide the peasants with facilities, funds, and easy loans and that there was also an urgent need to commercialize and industrialize the farming sector.

The federation is going to hand over its 40-point demands to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on February 15, 2010.

Their other plans include organizing a 3-day national conference on May 9-11, 2010. They are also planning to associate with La Via Campesina, sister organizations and participate in International Youth Peasants´ Movement in October in Ecuador.

The Federation has decided to hold an all Nepal awareness campaign in all five development regions of the country.
