KATHMANDU, Jan. 22: The second-rung leaders of the opposition political parties have said anti-government protests were started to topple the incumbent government after the coalition parties challenged the politics of consensus.

They even said that the coalition parties were not ready to hold the fresh elections rather they are prolonging their stay in power in a preplanned manner by dissolving the constituent assembly (CA).[break]

Speaking at an interaction programme organized by the Reporters´ Club in the capital today, the opposition leaders claimed to replace the government through the street protests.

On the occasion, Nepali Congress (NC) spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu said an NC-led election government under party President Sushil Koirala should be formed to end the deadlock.

He also said that elections should be held based on consensus as the current government has not prepared ground for holding the elections despite its rhetoric. Likewise, CPN (UML) secretary Yubraj Gyawali said the opposition parties were forced to take to the streets as the UCPN (Maoist) continued the politics of prohibition.

However, Prime Minister´s political advisor Devendra Poudel said the prime minister would not quit the post until a political agreement and added there was no option but to reach a next consensus soon.

Similarly, spokesperson of Federal Democratic Republican Alliance Prem Bahadur Singh said the current government can be changed into a national consensus one and urged the NC and UML to join the Bhattarai-led government.
