SIRAHA, Nov 11: Locals of Mirchaiya on Sunday handed over Kailas Thakur, who was attempting to shoot a local UCPN (Maoist) leader, to the police.

Thakur was trying to kill Srawan Yadav, a Mithila state committee member of the party, near the Jiba River situated between Mirchaiya and Karjanaha VDC.[break]

The locals took Thakur under control along with a pistol, a home-made gun and two rounds of bullets. According to Siraha Police chief Bikram Gurung, Yadav was able to dodge all the three bullets fired at him. “Anything could have happened. Luckily, Yadav escaped unscathed,” said Gurung.

Thakur has admitted to making a murder attempt on Yadav to avenge the “torture he underwent at the hands of Yadav´s lackeys” during schooldays.

“I have always wanted to kill Yadav but I did not have any weapon then. But I saved money to buy the weapons after I started a computer and mobile repair center,” Gurung quoted Thakur as saying.

However, police is not convinced that Thakur alone is the culprit. “We do not believe that Thakur alone is involved,” Gurung said.

The incident took place at a distance of merely 100 meter from the Area Police Office, Mirchaiya. Yadav was accused of the murder of Janakpur-based journalist Uma Singh but was later acquitted.
