More than 20 garbage trucks were stranded for over two days due to sudden protest called by the locals since Tuesday. The locals have been demanding that the government start the process for the construction of a bridge across Kolpu Khola.
“We finally agreed to open the road for garbage trucks,” Shyam Sundar Balami, a local resident, who was present during the talks with government officials at the Department of Road (DoR) told myrepublica.com.
According to Dr Sumitra Amatya, the general manager of the Solid Waste Management and Resources Mobilization Center (SWMRMC), some of the stranded trucks dumped garbage on Thursday evening. “The rest of the trucks will dump garbage tomorrow,” she said.
“The government has already allocated budget for the construction of the Kolpu Khola Bridge,” Dr Amatya said. “But, local residents of Okharpauwa were not assured. So we expressed our commitment in writing.” More than 5,000 tons of garbage has piled up in the valley due to frequent strikes.
