Numeric dominance of football

KATHMANDU, June 29: Though football has highest two nominees for Female Player of the Year award of the Pulsar Sports Award, they will be facing tough challenge from other three contenders for the prestigious award. [break]



One among footballers Jamuna Gurung and Anu Lama, wushu player Jharan Gurung, karateka Gangadevi Adhikari and swimmer Shreya Dhital will be crowned Female Player of the Year during award ceremony to he held on Tuesday in the capital. The winner will receive a Pulsar motorbike. The players were nominated for the award on the basis of their performance in international and domestic level throughout the year 2069 BS.



Jamuna Gurung, the national skipper of football team is one of the strong contenders for the award. She helped Nepal finish runner up in South Asian regional football fiesta SAFF Championship, Colombo. Gurung netted eight goals for Nepal in the tournament and bagged highest scorer award and extender her international goals tally to 25.



Gurung, also the skipper of Armed Police Force (APF)l scored 10 goals in the departmental team´s title haul of National Women´s Football Tournament. She was out of action after picking knee injury during a friendly match in Sikkim.



Gurung´s teammate Anu Lama is the other contender for the award. She scored highest nine goals in national jersey throughout the year including four in Kuwait friendly. The APF striker scored five and assisted for as many goals in the SAFF Championship. Lama also equalized the highest international scoring record of 25 goals with teammate Gurung. Lama who scored 12 goals in National Women´s Football Tournament was declared the best player of tournament and best forward in the First National Women´s League scoring highest 13 goals.



Ganga Devi Adhikari of Karate won three international gold medals in the year including one each in the Asia Pacific Siterio Championship, Hong Kong,, Singapore Open, Singapore and Fujil Tumbe Mujib, Bangladesh. Adhikari was also declared the best player in the 39th National Karate.



Jharana Gurung of wushu ended Nepal´s international title drought in Asian level nearly after two decade. Gurung became the first Nepali wushu player to win Asian level bronze after 18 years. She finished with bronze in 56 kg sansau in the Asian Wushu Championship, Vietnam.



Shreya Dhital is the number one swimmer of Nepal who represented the nation in three international swimming meet including London Olympics. Dhital bettered her own national record of 100m freestyle in Olympics and in 50m butterfly in domestic level. She won 13 gold medals in two national swimming events in the year.
