NTA selects 10 players from talent hunt

KATHMANDU, April 9: Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) has selected 10 young players from its door-to-door talent hunt program that concluded on Tuesday.



The selected players had emerged champions in their respective categories at the Best of the Best Taekwondo Championship held in Satdobato on Tuesday. Altogether 80 players from Kathmandu, Baglung, Rupandehi and Nuwakot had vied for 10 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals up for grabs in the tournament.[break]



Som Maya Tamang secured gold in the women´s 49 kg weight category while Reshma Thapa finished second. Nirmala Dangol and Mahima Thing finished joint third in the event.



In the women´s 46 kg category, Kajal Shrestha defeated Binika Joshi to claim gold while Kanchan Lama and Priyanka Shrestha settled for the third position.



Muna Khawas won the title in the women´s 53 kg section. Puja Shrestha finished second while Sushma Shrestha and Manju Lama were joint third.



Meanwhile, Pratima Chand clinched gold in the women´s 57 kg category defeating Jayanti Rai in the final. Kusum Gurung and Sanjit Lama both secured the third position.



In the men´s 54 kg section, Jhalak Man Tamang pipped Nirkamal Thakuri in the final match for the title. Niran Ghale and Bikram Lamichhane finished third.



Rimon Maharjan beat Bivek Rai in the men´s 58 kg final to lift the title. Raju Tamang and Manoj Shah clinched bronze medals.



Likewise, Sajan Maharjan and Tilak Ale secured the top two positions in the men´s 63 kg category while Pemba Lama and Nima Lama stood joint third.



In men´s 68 kg, Sujan Tamang and Nabin Shrestha secured gold and silver respectively while Resham KC and Rajin Singh clinched bronze medals.



Saksham Karki won the title in the men´s 74 kg category defeating Dharma Raj Waiba in the final. Sabin Kumar Nagarkoti and Horizon Rai finished joint third in the event.



In men´s 80 kg, Bijen Khatri defeated Man Bahadur Waiba in the final while Arjun Maharjan and Ashwin Maharjan secured the third position.



Earlier, National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama inaugurated the tournament and praised NTA´s initiative to produce talented players. Lama also said NSC would lend support to NTA in the project.
