KATHMANDU, April 1: Nepal Medical Council has said it was ready to furnish suggestions to any concerned authority if it sought help on the activities of the Institute of Medicine and the medical colleges as where they want to establish colleges and what subjects they select for curricula.
There is the provision that only the University can award affiliation to any medical college. So, the NMC has the only rights to monitor whether the colleges awarded affiliations have met the educational standard.
Newly appointed President of the NMC, Professor Dr Jageshwor Gautam, shared it with the media persons on Wednesday that the University only gives the preliminary report to the NMC before giving affiliation to the medical colleges.
"So, it is quite ridiculous to falsely implicate the NMC while it has very little role on conferring affiliation," he added.
The NMC, as he said, sometimes conducts onsite inspection at the colleges to monitor the education quality.
On to the ongoing hunger strike of Professor Dr Govinda KC whose one among the 10-point demands is 'resignation of NMC's President', President Gautam wondered, "What's the crime I have done to step down from the post? What's the wrong I have done to the NMC?"
Moreover, he said there was not any medical college running with his involvement. Quality medical education was one of the priorities of the Council, he added.
It is always the NMC's suggestion not to centre the medical education in cities, added Prof. Dr Gautam.
Government's Talks On with Dr KC

According to Chairman of Nepal Medical Association, Dr Anjani Kumar Jha, the government had nearly reached in a state that it would address all demands of Dr KC.
On the NMA's call, all services except emergency remained shutdown in the government and private health institutions on Wednesday.
