The golfers trained during the coaching will pick and train local youth between 10 and 21 years of age from several parts of the country. Eleven professional and 3 amateur golfers from Gokarna Forest Golf Course, Royal Nepal Golf Course, Himalaya Golf Course, Pokhara, Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Course participated in the training program. Players from Dharan Golf Course could not participate due to continuous strike in the eastern part of the country.
The players will now select at least 80-100 potential youth between 10 and 21 years of age and train them for three months from July 1 in their respective courses. After a three-month training, the best 40 players will be selected for a special training round in Kathmandu.
During this training session, trainers will oversee the progress of their students for a week. From the pool of the 40 players, top 20 will be chosen for the final round of coaching program -- Camp of Excellence -- in second week of October. The camp will be conducted by Brandon De Souza, along with local coaches.
The best five players selected from among the 20 players will receive golf equipment and opportunity to participate in the amateur segments of all tournaments of the “Surya-Nepal Golf Tour-2010”. Surya Nepal will bear all logistic and travel expenses.
After the end of the three-day training at Gokarna Forest Golf Course, De Souza said, “The aim of the program is to bring new kids to the golf course and show them that golf is also a fun game like cricket and football.”
“This will boost kids´ interest in the game and will benefit the sports in Nepal,” he said, adding, “I have been to Nepal since 1993, and I have no doubt that Nepal has talents, the only thing it lacks is exposure.”
Surya Nepal, the main sponsor of the program, said the training will be a conducted every year.
