KATHMANDU, April 27: Hundreds of members of the Joint Action Committee for Newa Autonomous State, who gathered at New Baneshwar on Tuesday afternoon, later picketed for hours the International Conference Center that houses the Constituent Assembly (CA) hall.

Members of the committee that comprises various ethnic wings of the major political parties including UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, were pressuring the top leadership of the parties to ensure a Newa Autonomous State and conclude the constitution-writing and peace process on time. Meanwhile, the committee members also submitted a memorandum to CA Chairman Subas Nembang, pressing fulfillment of a nine-point demand from the ethnic groups.

They demanded that the CA be immediately reactivated and its functioning made effective. "The idea of dissolving the CA and holding fresh elections is a conspiracy against the people´s mandate," the memorandum said.

The ethnic groups also demanded that the CA give recognition to historical as well as ethnic identity and ensure a Newa Autonomous State. "There should be a constitutional provision on secularism," the memorandum said.

Maoist lawmaker Hitman Shakya, NC lawmaker Tirtha Ram Dangol and Malla K Sundar, among others from the local Newar community, were present while submitting the memorandum to Nembang. They also addressed the mass gathered outside the CA hall.
