Nepalis in Bahrain advised precautions

KATHMANDU, March 15: The Nepali Embassy in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday issued an advisory, asking its citizens working in Bahrain to remain on alert in the wake of a fresh surge in the month-long simmering tension between Shia and Sunni Muslim communities in that gulf country.

According to Paras Ghimire, Deputy Chief of Mission at the embassy, Nepali migrant workers in Bahrain have been asked to not get involved in anti-government demonstrations, not stroll around in groups and manage food stock for at least one week. [break]

"We have also asked them to immediately contact us if they need any help," Ghimire said.

According to him, all Nepali workers are safe so far. Durga Giri, president of Nepali Club in Bahrain, they are fearful as the Bahrain unrest could turn into a deadly clash. The Bahrain government has declared a state of emergency to calm down the tension. Earlier, Saudi troops were called in to clamp down on anti-government protests.

Some 30,000 Nepali workers are currently employed in Bahrain. Most of them work in service sector in and around the central part of the capital city of Manama.
