Nepali colts beat Jordan in opener

KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Nepal started its AFC U-16 Championship Qualifies campaign with a 2-1 win over Jordan in the Group B opener in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday.

Rejin Subba scored both goals to seal Nepal's victory. Muhannad Mohammad Omar Abuawad netted the only goal for Jordan.Although Jordan started with offensive style, Nepal took time to settle and have control over the game.

After some unsuccessful attempts on goal, Nepal took the lead in the 27th minute. Rejin volleyed at the open net as a Jordanian defender tried to clear the ball with goalie Abdallah Ra'ed Mahmoud well beaten.

Nepal, went into the first half with a goal lead and doubled the advantage in the 69th minute. Rejin capitalized on a pass from Dinesh Henjan, a 38th minute replacement of Prezan Tamang, to score the second goal.

Jordan's forward Muhannad Mohammad, who replaced Mohammad Akram in the 73rd minute, scored a consolation goal in the injury time. It was too late for Jordan to bounce back in the game.

Rejin was replaced in the last minute of the game by Rajiv Lopchan as Nepal had almost collected three points.

Elated with the victory, Nepali coach Upendra Man Singh said that the players put in all their efforts against one of the tough teams.

"We played according to our plan and we utilized the opportunities to take control of the match. We adopted defensive approach at first as Jordan is one of the best teams," said Singh.

Singh's counterpart Abdullah Samih Elqutati, who was surprised with the outcome, congratulated Nepal for the victory and commented that mistakes in defense cost them the match.

"I can't believe this result as I had not expected such an outcome. However, this is football and anything can happen. Nepal was quick and took advantage of mistakes by our defenders," said Elqutati.

Nepal will face host Kyrgyzstan in its second match on Friday.
