Nepal on improving note says coach Dassanayake

KATHMANDU, July 3: Nepal's coach Pubudu Dasanayake on Friday said that his side was gradually improving despite third defeat in a row against the Netherlands in T20 International. Visiting Nepal on Thursday lost the four-match T20I series 3-0 after going down by 18 runs against host at the Hazelaarweg, Rotterdam in Netherlands. The fourth match is being played on late Friday night.

"The team's performance is on incline even though we lost three matches of the series in a row," said Dassanayak. "Each member of the team is improving and getting used to European conditions. The confidence of team is high."

Nepal which has lost is first and second matches by 18 runs and 103 runs respectively have failed to come up with satisfactory batting in all three matches of the series. In Wednesday's match, Nepal was given a mammoth target of 173 runs which resulted in its biggest T20I defeat - 103 runs.The Canadian coach of Sri Lanka origin however, believes that Nepal was batting well and it was strong enough to challenge for the ICC World T20 Qualifiers title scheduled to be held from July 9 to 26 in Ireland and Scotland.

"Conditions were the causes for back-to-back losses. In one of the games we didn't click because we had to go after bowling since it was a big chase," Dassanayake shared hinting to 173 run target. "We batted well in other two games despite the defeats."

On Thursday, Nepal managed only 131/9 in its target chase of 150 runs. Skipper Paras Khadka (36), Sarad Vesawkar (24), Pradeep Airee (18), Gyanendra Malla (17) and Subash Khakurel (14) scored in double figures for Nepal which was 19 runs short of target. Sharad was the only batsman for Nepal to hit a six in the innings.

Similar to last two matches of the series, Nepali openers failed to come up with satisfactory performance with bat. In the first two matches, the openers shared 12 runs partnerships, while there was 10 runs stand between Sagar Pun and Subash in the third match.

Although, Nepal lost its opener Sagar (5) in the second over with only 10 runs on the board, Subash and Gyanendra shared 32 runs stand for the second wicket to anchor Nepali inning. Skipper Paras shared 48-runs partnership with Sharad for the fifth wicket before Sharad was caught in the 18th over.

Ahan bagged last four wickets of Nepal -- Paras, Pradeep, Basant Regmi (0) and Sompal Kami (3) to guide the Netherlands to series win.

Earlier, opting to bat first, the Netherlands posted 149/6 with Stephen Myburgh's 71 runs off 56 balls that included two sixes and four boundaries. Skipper Peter Borren added 19 runs.

Karan KC bagged two wickets, while Sagar, Basant and Shakti Gauchan claimed one wicket each for Nepal.

Including, Thursday's match, Nepal has faced four defeats in T20I in a row since it beat Afghanistan in ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh last year. Nepal has won only two T20Is in seven matches it has played so far.
