Nepal marks 50 years of UNPK

KATHMANDU, June 10: Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala on Wednesday said Nepal´s contribution to international peace and security through the UN peacekeeping has been “well appreciated by the international community in general and the UN in particular.”



Pointing that Nepal is currently the fifth largest contributor to the UN peacekeeping force, Koirala said, “This is a reflection of our determination to lend full support for the role of the UN in protecting lives of the people around the world.” She added, “We hope that the gap between the strategic and operational levels of the UN operations is bridged by providing proper mandate and sufficient human and financial resources to deal with various problems around the world."



Addressing a gathering to commemorate 50 years of Nepal´s involvement in UN peacekeeping operations, she said, “The new government will continue to give priority to Nepal´s participation in these operations with a view to promoting world peace and stability.”



It was informed during the program, organized jointly by the Nepal Council of World Affairs, Institute of Foreign Affairs, Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force, some 3,100 Nepali soldiers serve in 12 UN peacekeeping missions around the world at present.
