KATHMANDU, Oct 27: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has urged the public to take caution while using electrical appliances with possible power outage or damage to electrical infrastructure during the adverse weather condition for three days starting Thursday.

Issuing a notice on Tuesday, the state-owned power utility has mentioned that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in various parts of the country during the second half of this week. In light of the situation, the authority has advised the public to assess risks during adverse weather, stay in safe locations, avoid unnecessary travel, and use electrical appliances with caution.

Citing a special weather bulletin issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) on Monday, the NEA stated that a powerful cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal could result in rain, snowfall, floods, landslides, lightning, strong winds, and inundation in Nepal.

The NEA has requested that necessary precautions be taken, as adverse weather conditions could damage electrical infrastructure—such as utility poles, wires, and transformers—potentially disrupting electricity services. The NEA has stated that it has placed staff at relevant offices on high alert to ensure the safety of electrical infrastructure and to carry out immediate repairs should any service disruptions occur, thereby ensuring a steady power supply.

Furthermore, the NEA has urged the public to rely solely on information from official sources when taking necessary precautionary measures. With a possible power outage or damage to electrical infrastructure, the NEA has urged its consumers to contact their local distribution center or the designated help desk.

As per the DoHM notice, there will be a significant change in the weather across the country starting Thursday. There is a possibility of moderate rainfall in most areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as in some parts of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Furthermore, the DoHM has indicated that heavy snowfall and rain are expected in some high-altitude (mountainous) regions of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces. This could impact daily life, tourism, transportation, and mountaineering activities.

The DoHM has warned that there is a risk that heavy snowfall could make travel difficult on roads and trekking trails in the mountainous regions, lead to increased cold in high-altitude settlements, and disrupt tourism-related activities. The department has strongly advised that tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, and local residents—especially those in high-altitude areas—check the weather conditions before traveling.
