KATHMANDU, August 17: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) suffered a loss of Rs 3 billion last year due to waiver in street lights tariff, fluctuation in foreign exchange rate and export of electricity at high cost.

Speaking on the occasion of 24th anniversary of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Monday, NEA Managing Director Dr Jivendra Jha said that leakage and high export cost had caused the loss. He said that NEA has borne an overall loss of Rs 12.33 billion. He further said that the NEA has not increased the electricity tariff for the past 9 years. He said that even when the cost per unit has reached Rs 9.50, the NEA is charging only Rs 6.71 to its consumers.

NEA raised an income of Rs 16.21 billion from electricity sales which is 1.19 per cent more than the year before.
