The bureau in the past weeks sent out sniffing dogs in different suspicious areas but no seizures have been made till date.
NCB on Tuesday conducted a drug sniffing operation at Cargo Building at Tribhuwan International Airport following a recent seizure of illegal drugs packed inside coconut that was bound for Hong Kong. [break]
According to SSP Rana Bahadur Chand, who is also the operation head of the dog sniffing campaign, said, “Though we have not made huge seizures of contraband drugs, using sniffing dogs has turned out to be very impressive.”
NCB had used five drug-sniffing dogs along with a dozen policemen in different areas in the presence of NCB Deputy Chief SSP Chand. We have begun a new campaign as an anti-drug operation in the Valley to send a strong signal to the smugglers. It does not matter whether we make seizures or not.
A police personnel at the Cargo Division of TIA requesting anonymity said it was useless to conduct such operations by making pre-announcement. "How can such operation be successful when the wrongdoers are alert beforehand," he asked.
"NCB has become more proactive and progressive in the recent weeks," SSP Chand said. "We will hold discussions with different colleges, hostels and couriers and cargo operators in the upcoming days."
The bureau had detained two students from a hostel at Shankhamul for possessing illegal drugs. The same hostel is now operating under a different name after the incident.
Hostel rooms are thought to be safer than public places for college students, so we will keep our eyes on them and conduct regular inspections, he said. We have got positive response from the parents and the public since we began to operate drug-sniffing dogs, he added.
The number of hard drug users and pharmaceutical drug users is high among 10+2 students, according to NCB´s recent report.
