The committee was formed on March 17 to guide the Khil Raj Regmi led Interim Election of Council of Ministers to carry out its tasks after the one month term of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal expired on Sunday.[break]
Leaders close to Koirala said he will primarily focus on bringing the agitating alliance led by Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist and another alliance led by Upendra Yadav-led Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Nepal on board the election process during his term.
Among other things, HLPC is entrusted with extending necessary assistance to the Regmi-led poll government to hold election by mid-December, recommending candidates for the vacant positions in various constitutional bodies and holding talks with the disgruntled political forces to create environment conducive to polls.
The NC Mahasamiti meeting held recently in Trivenidhaam in Nawalparasi had passed the resolution to take proactive initiatives to hold talks with all the agitating parties to ensure timely election. “As per the decision of the Mahasamiti meeting, we will be taking special initiatives to bring all the agitating parties on board the election process through negotiations. We are confident that all the agitating parties will take part in the election,” said NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula.
Among other things, HLPC is yet to address the concerns of the fringe parties over the election related ordinances forwarded to the government. Eligibility threshold for seats under the proportional representation system and the provision related to candidates´ criminal background have drawn criticism of several parties, except NC and CPN-UML.
