KATHMANDU, March 29: The leaders of the ruling party, Nepali Congress and the representatives of the government and the leaders of the main opposition party, UCPN (Maoist) held discussion yet again in view of forging consensus to draft the new constitution.

The meeting on Saturday held at the Lazimpat residence of UCPN (Maoist) Chair Pushpakamal Dahal laid special focus in seeking a meeting point on the disputed issues of federalism, shared the Vice-President of NC, Ramchandra Poudel following the meeting.

VC Poudel, shedding light on the 'extensive' discussion between NC and UCPN (Maoist) on federalism, informed that the leaders sought ways on finding a common ground on number of federal states and its name proposed by the ruling parties but opposed by the opposition.

Stating that the dialogue and discussion would resolve all the issues prevailing in connection to drafting a new constitution, the leaders of the ruling party advised the UCPN (Maoist) not to take to the streets in the backdrop when the opposition alliance has declared an agitation starting from tomorrow.

"Many works pertaining to development and prosperity have been delayed with the failure to complete the constitution drafting process on time; the constitution must be drafted at the earliest for which we must make an all out effort for consensus; so we felt the need for holding an extensive discussion on alternative aspects to forge consensus," Vice President Poudel said.

UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha said the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) leaders were advised to hold necessary discussion within their parties for agreement so as to forestall any chances of pushing the country towards renewed conflict and confrontation.

"The ruling parties must come forward more responsibly for agreement, and the constitution must be drafted on basis of consensus otherwise we have already announced agitation, and have made it clear we can chose an optional path," Shrestha said.

The constitution making process came to a standstill in midway after the ruling and the opposition parties failed to agree on federal state model, form of governance, electoral and judicial system.

The meeting was attended by Nepali Congress Vice President Poudel, Ministers Mahesh Acharya and Narhari Acharya, leader Ramesh Lekhak and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Dahal, senior leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai and Vice Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha. RSS
