KATHMANDU: The deadly terrorist attacks in Mumbai are prompting new efforts to bolster security in Nepal by law enforcement officials who fear that terrorists could sneak here through open borders and cause havoc. Home Ministry has directed three security agencies - Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and National Intelligence Department - to keep special vigil at various vital installations in Kathmandu Valley and border points adjoining India. The vital installations include Tribhuvan International Airport, diplomatic buildings, Singh Durbar, Constituent Assembly Hall, luxury hotels and various public utilities including water, electricity and telecommunication towers, among others.

Officials at Home Ministry said they have also directed security agencies to ensure safety of VVIPs including President, Vice-President, Prime Minister and other ministers and senior government officials.

Police have already increased patrolling in Kathmandu Valley and security checking has been beefed up at border points.

“We have already finalized a detailed security arrangement to be taken up in the wake of mounting threats of terrorist activities,” said a Home Ministry official, preferring to be unnamed. “The plan will come into full-fledged implementation once it is endorsed by Home Minister.”

The government move comes in the wake of a terrorist attack on India´s financial hub Mumbai last week that left more than 170 people dead.
