KATHMANDU, July 15: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) is all set to establish an anti-doping section within the ministry.

Speaking at a function held in capital on Thursday, MoYS Secretary Shreeram Panta said that the proposal to set up a separate section has been submitted to the Ministry of General Administration. [break]

“Nepal has ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sports on January 24, 2010 and we are planning to amend our current Sports Development Act,” said Panta.

After the ratification of the convention, Nepal has to establish National Anti-doping Organization (NADO) as soon as possible. “The government will set up an anti-doping sports body but before that we should raise awareness among athletes and the concerned people,” said Panta. “Setting up NADO is a complex process,” he added.

Spokesperson for the ministry Bharat Nepali Pyakurel informed that the ministry had conducted anti-doping seminars targeting school teachers in Kathmandu and Pokhara last year.

South Asia Regional Anti-doping Organization Board-member Dr Saroj Krishna Shrestha said that Nepal should produce skilled manpower before setting up NADO. He also informed about World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) and its guidelines.

Dr Ajay Rana, Chief of the Sports and Medicine Research Center at the NSC, informed about the WADA Code that states about testing, the prohibited list, therapeutic use exemptions, laboratories and protection of privacy.
