KATHMANDU, Nov 17: The number of Nepali students enrolled in the United States colleges for higher education has increased by 29.6 per cent this year. [break]

According to an annul report published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), 11,581 students have been enrolled in the US colleges during the academic year 2008/09 as against 8,936 in the previous year.

With this sharp increase, Nepal has been ranked 11th in the list of the leading countries of origin of international students, two tiers up from previous ranking. India tops the list with 15.4% students followed by China with 14.7% students.

This year´s report shows that the total number of international students at colleges and universities in the US has increased by 8% to an all-time high of 671,616 in the year 2008/09. The report shows an even stronger increase in the number of new international students.

According to Terry J White, public affairs counselor at the US Embassy in Kathmandu, America´s nearly 3,000 accredited schools of higher education continue to attract new students into what is becoming a highly competitive international ´market´ around the world.

The US remains the preferred destination for students from Nepal who want to study abroad because of the quality and prestige associated with American degree. Another contributing factor is greater access to comprehensive and accurate information about study in the US through advising offices in Nepal coupled with an increased level of activity by the US colleges and universities to attract students.

Meanwhile AFP reports that the number of foreigners enrolled at US universities shot to a record high in the last academic year fueled by an influx of Chinese students, an educators´ group said Monday.

India remained the top source of foreign students in the United States but their numbers appeared to be leveling off, with strong new growth coming from China as well as Vietnam and several other emerging economies.

The number of foreign students increased eight percent to a record 671,616 in 2008-2009 from the previous academic year, the sharpest growth since 1980-81, said the annual report by the Institute of International Education.

With foreign students generating close to 18 billion dollars a year, officials and educators said higher education was proving to be a strong engine to bolster the troubled US economy.

Judith McHale, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, said US universities were also a crucial element in improving the US image around the world by offering foreigners a first-hand look at the United States.
