KATHMANDU, June 30: Ministry of Education (MoE) has directed the District Education Offices (DEO) to implement the system of reward and punishment for schools on the basis of their SLC pass rate this year.

The schools whose SLC results were poor compared to the previous year will be required to furnish clarification to the respective DEOs. The DEO will then reward the schools (both community and private) with good performance and punish those with poor performance would face punishment.

Concluding that mere four percent improvement in the pass rate was too little to cheer up, the MoE has directed the DEOs to strictly implement the guidelines prepared for improving the schools' performance."Let the ministry know the initiatives taken by school managements after this year's SLC results were published," read the MoE statement issued on Monday. The ministry has given the DEOs 45 days to submit reports on the schools.

Following the devastating earthquake, several colleges in the affected districts have been running their classes at schools and this has hampered the studies of schoolchildren. The ministry has directed the DEOs to make sure that the studies at the schools are not affected under any pretexts.

"Those schools which are operating under makeshift arrangements need to make sure that the teachers are taking the classes regularly and the textbooks have reached the students," stated the MoE.

To cover the course of study on time, the MoE has also asked the schools to revise their academic calendar. The school management is authorized to take decision to run extra classes during public holidays to make up for the classes lost during the earthquake.
