While directing its cadres to remove the posters that have already been pasted up, the Maoist party has decided to remove these Indian symbols from new ones to be printed. [break]
The party took a decision to this effect after concluding that the posters “hurt Indian national sentiments”.
“It was a mistake. The party standing committee has decided to rectify the mistake in the posters and print new ones,” Maoist leader CP Gajurel told media persons in Biratnagar, Thursday.
He said the party is careful not to make such mistakes again and is flipping through other pamphlets to see if other such mistakes have been committed.
Two weeks back, Indians in the border town of Jogbani had demonstrated against the Maoist posters saying they hurt their national sentiments. Following this, cross-border relations at the people´s level soured and the number of Nepalis visiting the border town for shopping went down. Joint goodwill rallies were subsequently held to thaw out the relationship.
“We received tremendous help from the Indian people during the people´s war. They are our good friends. We decided to rectify the mistake after there was reaction against the posters from the people´s level,” said Gajurel.
The Maoist party has also directed its district committees not to use the posters. “We have directed removal of these posters as far as possible,” said a local Maoist leader, “The central committee has asked us to return those we currently have in store.”
