KATHMANDU, July 15: The price of major vegetables have gone up over the week, due to the supply side constraints linked to lean production season and lack of timely supply.

Vegetables such as tomato, cauliflower, brinjal, dry onion, cow pea, green soyabean, squash, spanish leaf, mushroom and green onion have seen a rise in price from Rs 4 to Rs 45 per kg.[break]

Huge fluctuation has been witnessed in the price of tomato which stands Rs 80 per kg until Monday. Tomato that was wholesaled at Rs 35 per kg a week before has mounted to Rs 80. Wholesalers at Kalimati vegetable market believe that the price of tomato has risen is due to its surging demand outside the valley.

"The demand for tomato produced in the valley has increased elsewhere. As huge amount of tomato is being exported to districts outside Kathmandu, the production have not been able to meet the demand in the capital. Thus, tomato´s price has witnessed this growth," said Bharat Khatiwada, President of Vegetable Wholesalers´ Association of Nepal.

"The demand for most of the vegetables in the valley is increasing day by day. However, the supply is limited," Khatiwada added.

According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB), the price of major vegetables has increased also because their season is getting over. Similarly, road blockages caused by the monsoon have also affected the supply.

The price of capsicum has increased by Rs 20 per kg over the week and is being sold at Rs 120 a kg, while the price of local cauliflower has gone up to Rs 60 per kg from Rs 45 last week. Likewise, the price of brinjal has increased to Rs 45 per kg from Rs 40 last week, and cow pea is selling at Rs 50 per kg, up from Rs 40 per kg last week.

Similarly, prices of dry onion and green onion have also increased by Rs 5 per kg , and they cost Rs 46 and Rs 45 per kg respectively. Spanish leaf is selling at a higher price of Rs 45 per kg up from Rs 40 last week.

However, the prices of red and white potato, carrot, cabbage and other vegetables remains unchained.
