One of my friends was really ambitious and worked equally hard to achieve his dreams. But as he went on achieving his goals in the modeling industry, he nearly lost his real self.[break]
When he was a teenager, he went in search of an institute that trained people to be radio presenters. He found one, but there his teacher suggested that he should be a model instead. “You have a really good potential to become a successful model,” the teacher told him.
My friend didn’t take it seriously, and shrugged it off as a wonderful compliment. Later, he decided to take dancing lessons, where his dance teachers told him the same thing again – that his personality would make for a good model.
The truth is, my friend had always been interested in modeling since a very young age. Wearing good clothes and becoming the center of attraction made him happy. Eventually, he joined the industry and went on to become one of the leading models of the Nepali modeling scene.
He started getting offers for music videos, became the showstopper for many ramp shows and there was a bit of a fan following too. The name and fame that he had garnered only made him hungry for more. His ambition grew bigger each day, and this became unstoppable. His real self was slowly fading as his model persona shone in constant camera flashes and TV screens.
He was successful, no doubt about that, but he was also losing himself each day. On the other hand, his accomplishment didn’t please many in the industry.
One of his contemporaries, out of sheer envy of his success, made a plan to provoke him into a clash and later defame him. They were quite successful in aggravating a tussle, and hence filed a wrong case against him, which sent him behind bars. Luckily, he was deemed innocent and freed.
Ambition is like a machine that doesn’t know how to stop by itself. Either the machine operator needs to stop it from overworking or it stops itself after being damaged. In my friend’s case, the latter happened.
The incident shattered him, but is now slowly recovering. What I’m trying to point here is that my friend’s ambition led him to achieve his dreams, certainly, but his ambition also blinded him. So much that even reality deluded him.
Life tests us in many ways. At first it gives everything and again it takes all of them back in the blink of an eye. Yes, we need to be ambitious, but we also need to acknowledge the good things that God has given us. We need to organize our achievements and keep a check on our ambition before it’s too late.
