Landslides imperil historic Changunarayan temple

KATHMANDU, July 24: The historic and touristic Changunarayan Temple in Bhaktapur district has been pushed to the peril after landslides occurred at both the sides of the temple.



The landslides that occurred in the eastern and western side of the Temple are likely to collapse the temple it if the concerned authorizes fail to heed to it on time. The Temple included in the World Heritage List is facing the landslides due to deepening Manohara River triggered with excavation of sand.[break]



Priest at the temple Chakradharanand Rajopadhyay said the landslide in the western part has reached near the Chandra Surya Matha beside the temple.



The Matha where daily worship is conducted is now getting slid down but the concerned authorities are not, he wondered exuding plight.



Similarly, the locals pointed out the deepening Manohar River with illegal digging of sand as the single cause of landslide up to the Temple area.



However, the Office of the Department of the Archaeology and Darbar Supervision in Bhaktapur said it had no budget for preventing landslides.



Due to the landslide effect, the stairs to reach the Temple are damaged.
