GIMDI (Lalitpur), March 7: Some villages in the southern belt of Lalitpur district still lack communications services despite their proximity with the country´s capital.

People in Ashrang, Gimdi and Thula Durlung Village Development Committee (VDCs) that lie beyond the Mahabharat range in the district are still deprived of communication facilities. [break]

The newspapers do not reach these VDCs the same day and even the reception of the radio is not sound.

Although the use of mobile telephony is on the increase in recent years, the quality of service is not good as the service-providers have not upgraded the facility.

Gimdi is 56 kilometres away from Satdobato, Lalitpur. This remote village lacks even basic communications services, not to talk of advanced information technology.

As the Nepal Telecom has not extended the central telephone line to this VDC, even the landline telephone service is not available here.

People here are facing a lot of inconvenience due to the lack of access to means of communications and timely dissemination of information.

For instance, if a person needs to call for an ambulance, that person has to leave behind the patient at the health post and hunt for a strategic location to make a phone call, as your mobile phone does not quite often show the tower here.

Although this VDC has access to motorable road, it is difficult to call for an ambulance because of the lack of telephone service, lamented Indra Sanjel, a local.

The people here have to walk for two to three hours to make a phone call.

Similar is the condition of communication services in Thula Durlung VDC which is approximately 70 kilometres from the capital. This VDC also utterly lacks communications services.

Due to the lack of communications facilities, the local farmers have not been able to promote the market for their produce, including coffee.

Thula Durlung VDC is the remotest among the 41 VDCs in the southern belt of Lalitpur district.

Though situated next to the capital city, many VDCs in the Lalitpur district are far behind in terms of infrastructures of development.
