SEOUL, June 7: Authorities in South Korea have directed its immigration department to keep special consideration to safeguard human rights while arresting illegal workers.

Department of Immigration has been directed not to mete out physical or mental violence against the workers without visa.

Local media have published and broadcast the news with priority, terming the government decision a ´positive move.´

A new immigration code of conduct set to come into force starting June 15 has said that immigration officer concerned will be liable to punishment if he or she is found violating human rights of the persons arrested. However, this provision is yet to be incorporated into Korean law.

The code of conduct is aimed at making the immigration officials cautious about human rights of illegal workers.

As per the code of conduct, immigration authorities need to issue arrest warrant and provide chance to the illegal workers to furnish their opinion. Each immigration police team to be deployed for the arrest will include at least one woman member.

However, workers have demanded the provisions set in the code of conduct to be incorporated in the law governing the foreign workers.
