KATHMANDU, April 2: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), in collaboration with Sajha Yatayat, will begin operating a night public bus service from April 14 (Nepali New Year).
The service will run electric buses on two routes connecting major areas, hospitals, and the international airport in the Kathmandu Valley.
One north–south route will run from Lagankhel to Budhanilkantha via Patan Hospital, Alka, Norvic Hospital, Maternity Hospital, Trauma Center, Bir Hospital, Kanti Children’s Hospital, Teaching Hospital, and Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre. The one-way distance of this route is about 16 kilometers.
The second east–west route will operate from Thankot to the Tribhuvan International Airport via Satungal, Kalanki, Kalimati, Tripureshwor, Thapathali, Maitighar Mandala, Baneshwor, Minbhavan, and Tinkune, covering a one-way distance of around 20 kilometers.
Kathmandu-Pokhara night tourist bus service resumes
According to the metropolitan office, four electric buses will operate on these two routes.
Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said the service is being introduced to address the lack of public transport after 8 pm, which often forces commuters to rely on expensive travel options.
“Due to the absence of public transport or alternatives at night, many people face difficulties. Women and teenage girls are particularly vulnerable to harassment, while students also face financial burdens. We aim to improve this situation through the night bus service,” she said.
Initially, the buses will operate from 8 pm to 11 pm, with a bus arriving at designated stops every 20 minutes. The buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras, and municipal police personnel will be deployed to ensure passenger safety.
