Earlier on Friday morning, Katawal had asked the ministry in writing seeking the leave. He also entrusted Lt Gen Chhatraman Singh Gurung, the second-in-command in the Nepal Army, with taking charge as the acting army chief of the national army from the same day.
It is a tradition for army chief to go on leave for one month before retirement.
