KATHMANDU, Jan 4: The Indian embassy in Nepal said Monday that the remarks of Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor on the issue of PLA integration was "highly distorted". Issuing a press statement, the embassy said that the remarks "do not reflect Government of India´s position on the issue".

Stating that the two countries share close military and defense ties with strong institutional linkages between the two state armies, the statement further said that certain political parties are "deliberately exploiting these distortions to generate a controversy involving India".

Chairman of UCPN (Maoist), Pushpa Kamal Dahal, during a recent Maoist rally held in New Baneshwar had said that Kapoor´s remarks were objectionable. He had also sought clarification about Kapoor´s remarks on PLA integration.

Kapoor had reportedly said that rebels should not be incorporated en masse in the national army.
