The makeshift diversion, constructed as an alternative to a bridge currently under construction along the Postal Highway, was washed away by Saturday morning’s flood.

Heavy rain since Thursday night caused fresh damage, leaving hundreds of vehicles and passengers stranded midway. The diversion had only recently been repaired and brought back into operation after being damaged by rainfall a few days ago.

According to Assistant Chief District Officer Chet Raj Baral, repair work is not possible at the moment due to the high-water flow in the river. “The flow is stronger on the western side. Once the water level recedes, we will move ahead with embankment construction using the municipality’s excavator,” he said.

Locals have been suffering for years due to severe delays in the bridge construction over the Kamala River. In the absence of a proper bridge, they are forced during the monsoon to risk their lives by using boats or take long detours via the East-West Highway.
