KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Briefing the central working committee on his efforts to bridge the widening rift in the party, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala said on Thursday that he has done his best to forge a compromise with leader Sher Bahadur Deuba though the latter continues to snub him.

According to Prakash Man Singh, general secretary of the party, Koirala told the central working committee that Deuba should attend the central committee meeting and discuss his grievances in an institutional way. [break]

“Boycott is not a solution to the problem,” Singh quoted Koirala as saying at the meeting that was boycotted by 30 members close to Deuba.

The Deuba faction boycotted the central working committee meeting for the second consecutive day in protest of the dissolution of four sister organizations of the party. The majority establishment of the party had dissolved Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepal Women Association, Janjati Adibasi Association and Prajatantra Senani Association in September despite protest from the Deuba faction.

The dissenting faction has demanded reinstatement of the dissolved sister organizations.

According to a central working committee member, Koirala told the meeting that he would move ahead despite the boycott as he has already met Deuba in a bid to settle the row. “He has not been cooperating though I want to resolve the problem,” the leader quoted Koirala as saying.

He further told the meeting that Deuba has not been cooperating with him to run the party ever since the former was elected president of the party one-and-a-half years ago. “I waited for one-and-a-half years seeking his cooperation. But he is not allowing me to run the party smoothly. Now I should move ahead ignoring him or quit,” the leader quoted Koirala.

Some leaders had suggested the meeting to form a committee to resolve the differences between the establishment and the Deuba faction while others termed the boycott of the Deuba faction as an irresponsible act.

Other leaders suggested that the central committee should pass an appeal to the Deuba faction to attend the meeting and seek solution to the row from the party. But no decision was taken.
