KATHMANDU, June 3: A meeting of the high level political committee (HLPC) has failed to fix the date of Constituent Assembly (CA) on Monday as the leaders of main parties stuck to their own stances.

The meeting was expected to finalize the new poll date of the CA.[break]

Emerging from the meeting CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said, " The meeting could not forge consensus on various provisions of the new electoral law including proportional representation threshold, voluntarily declaration of property details by the CA candidates prior to filing their candidacy and banning the candidates to contest election those convicted by the courts.”

According to Khanal, the meeting, however, reached to an understanding on the issue of downsize the CA strength.

Earlier on Sunday, an eight-member taskforce that was entrusted with the responsibility of offering suggestions to the HLPC had agreed the proposal to downsize the 601-member CA to 491 members as proposed earlier.

Earlier, some fringe parties, including UCPN (Maoist) and Madhes-based parties were against the downsize proposal while the NC, CPN-UML and some other parties were in favor.
