“Erosion intensifies as the water level downs,” said Mohan Bhattarai, engineer of WDCO Biratnagar. Since last October when the floods demolished the eastern embankment, the river has continuously been eroding the relatively fragile parts of the embankment.
Indian construction company Vasistha & Vasistha, though, has repaired the fragile parts in the course of rebuilding the eastern embankment. “Erosion continues as it takes time for water to take a new course,” secretary Jha said.
The inspection team directed the local administration about immediate measures to avert possible dangers. “I have directed to work for preventing further loss,” Minister Khand said, adding that as emergency works are underway, problems might arise frequently.
“As we begin the long-term projects, the problem abates,” Khand said. “We are consulting with donor agencies to project them.”
