Police arrested Rahul Gupta, 20, of Biratnagar-7, on Wednesday night for duping them into needlessly rescuing him from non-existent abductors. [break] “Gupta repeatedly phoned his relatives and love interest to rescue him by paying ransom to his imaginary abductors,” Rewati Dhakal, DSP at District Police Office (DPO) of Morang, said. “Later on, Gupta himself turned out to be his abductor.”
Gupta, later when arrested, revealed that he pretended to be abducted to win over a girl who earlier refused his love interest. “The girl I proposed to had an affair with some other boy,” he told journalists. “I thought she would show her sympathy over me if I were abducted. I, therefore, planned to abduct myself.”
Police arrested Gupta smelling a rat in what he told police and parents over phone, purportedly from the captivity of abductors. As he phoned his parents, Gupta said that he was arrested by three persons hailing from hills. On the contrary, he told police that he was detained by four Madhesi persons.

He asked his parents to pay Rs 20,000 to his abductors. However, he himself took this money. During phone conversations with the police and his parents, Gupta had said that the abductors kept on shifting their hide-outs.
Police from Morang, Sunsari, Saptari, Siraha, Bara, Parsa and Dhaunusha had been deployed to rescue him.
