KATHMANDU, March 18: Former minister Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta was released from jail late Monday morning after he completed his 13 months jail term for corruption.

Gupta walked out of the Dillibazar prison at around 11:40 am today to an overwhelming reception by his supporters assembled outside the jail. [break]

The Supreme Court in February last year had order jail term to Gupta, who was then information and communications minister, after convicting him of graft. He was also slapped Rs 8.4 million in fine.  As he surrendered in time, Gupta had been conceded a 20 per cent discount both in fine and imprisonment.

Before the apex court order, the Commission of Investigation for Abuse of Authority had filed a case against Gupta, accusing him of earning Rs 20.8 million from unknown sources between 1992 and 2002 when he held public offices.
