KATHMANDU, August 21: The government has sacked Tulasi Prasad Gautam, chief administrator of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), from his position.

A Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, removed Gautam from EPF’s high ranking post. Gautam had been assuming the position illegitimately since he retired on May 29, 2019. As per the rule, a person should be an EPF depositor or an employee of the organization to hold the position.

The KP Oli-led government appointed Gautam as the EPF chief on September 23, 2018. Even after retiring, Gautam, showing political influence, retained the position on the backing of the then Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada. A writ has recently been filed at the Supreme Court against Gautam’s unfair move.

After the formation of the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma was reported to have asked him to resign. Gautam, who also represents the board of Himalayan Bank Limited from EPF, had been refusing Sharma’s order.
