KATHMANDU, July 23: A meeting of the taskforce formed by United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) on Saturday concluded that the budget has failed to fulfill the commitment made by the government with Madhes-based parties.

“Some of our demands have not been addressed in the budget despite the government´s commitment,” Atmaram Sah, general secretary of Madhesi People´s Right Forum-Republican (MPRF-R) told Republica after the meeting.[break]

The government had unveiled the budget in parliament after an eleventh-hour agreement with the five Madhes-based parties.

Sah said UDMF, an alliance of five Madhes-based political parties, would hold a meeting on Sunday to decide the stance they would adopt in parliament.

The taskforce meeting also concluded that the government did not mention specific timeframe for construction of the postal road. The UDMF had asked the government to allocate budget in such a way that the construction of the road could be completed within the next three years.

Similarly, the meeting concluded that government did not allocate sufficient budget for North-West railway expansion as proposed by the Indian government.

MPRF-R Chairman Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta said the UDMF would first participate in discussion over the annual budget in parliament. “We will then chalk out our strategy,” he said.

He argued that the indecision of the main opposition Nepali Congress over the peace process, constitution writing and formation of a new government has weakened the role of opposition parties in parliament.
