The four-day event, which will be held at Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall, will showcase wide variety of flowers as well as the latest development in the Nepali floriculture sector. "The expo is being organized with the objective of making Nepal self-sufficient in flowers and disseminate information about Nepal´s floriculture industry," Lok Nath Gaire, president of FAN, said Sunday.
The expo will have a total of 60 stalls, including 53 commercial stalls and five informative stalls. Two stalls will be for competition purpose. FAN will hold competition among firms involved in flower decoration as well as home and garden decoration.
According to the organizers, the event will showcase different floral varieties like seasonal flowers, ornamental flowers, cut flowers, potted plants, bedding plants, dry flowers, and flower bulb and seeds. Similarly, compost and fertilizers, agricultural tools, and packaging materials, among others will also be exhibited at the expo.
Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada is scheduled to inaugurate the event.
About 450 varieties of ornamental flowers, including Symbedia orchid, which being is promoted under ´One Village, One Product´ program of the government, will be exhibited at the expo. Similarly, live demonstration on flower decoration will be organized every day from 1 to 2 pm.
“The floriculture sector has been flourishing in recent years with local demand increasing by 10-15 percent every year,” Kumar Kasaju Shrestha, expo coordinator and vice president of FAN, said, adding, “We are heading toward self-sufficiency on flower. At present only around 20 percent of the demand is met through imports.”
According to FAN, Nepal´s floriculture industry was worth Rs 1.05 billion in 2011/12. During the period, Nepal exported flowers worth Rs 100 million while imports stood at Rs 40.5 million.
Nepal exports flower bulbs and tissue culture plants to different European countries along with Japan, Kuwait, Qatar and India.
The organizers are eyeing total transaction of around Rs 7.5 million during the four-day expo. The event is expected to draw 65,000 visitors. Entrance fee of the expo has been fixed at Rs 40 for general visitors and Rs 20 for students.
The expo is supported by Floriculture Co-operative, One Village One Product Implementing Committee and Lalitpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).
