KANCHANPUR, Oct 8: Raghubir Pujari, 61, a resident of Chandani VDC-5 of Kanchanpur district, said that in his entire life he has cast a total of eight votes to different political leaders in Kanchanpur district.

Concerned over the yearly flooding, Pujari wanted the leaders to build a strong embankment along the Mahakali and Jogbuda River, but no serious efforts have been made by the leaders or the government. [break]

Pujari said many locals are vulnerable to annual flooding and risk losing properties and lives.

"I never fail to convey my request to leaders during elections. An embankment that was built in the past didn´t last very long," said Pujari.

"This year, too, the raging river inundated human settlements and rendered huge property loss," he added.

"It is a matter of life and death for us and none of the leaders that we trusted are concerned about our problems," said Ganesh Sunar of Chandani VDC-5.

Every year hundreds of locals in the VDC are rendered homeless due to flooding.

"The flooding that occurred in June damaged my lands and my family is now homeless. The government and the leaders are our only hope," said Ram Bahadur Nepali of Chandni VDC-5.
