Ex-army men win gold for PLA

MAHENDRANAGAR, March 1: Ex-army men Gopal Bahadur Shrestha and Gyan Bahadur Shrestha clinched gold medals for PLA Sports Club of Maoist combatants in weightlifting during the Sixth National Games here on Thursday.



Gyan Bahadur won gold in men´s 105 kg weight category while his teammate Gopal Bahadur clinched gold in men´s plus 105 kg weight category. [break]Gyan Bahadur lifted 108 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean and jerk while Gyan Bahadur lifted 112 kg in snatch and 150 kg in clean and jerk.



Both Gyan Bahadur and Gopal Bahadur are retired Nepal Army men and had won gold medals at the Fifth National Games for Nepal Army.



Nepal Police Club became the weightlifting team champion claiming seven golds.



Pradhan had coached Army Club in the past and led the club to team championships. Army Club pulled out of the Sixth National Games.

PLA Club won three golds in weightlifting while Far-western Region and Central Region claimed a gold each.



Gyan Bahadur Shrestha of PLA and Tara Pun of Nepal Police Club were awarded with the titles of ´strongest man´ and ´strongest woman´.







Meanwhile, Nepal Weightlifting Association (NWA) felicitated all the South Asian Games medalists on the final day of the competition. NWA felicitated Jyoti Paudel, Subodh Shrestha, Kanan Chaudhary, Jeevan Gautam, Sanjay Maharjan, Ram Kumar Shrestha, Gopal Bahadur Shrestha, Gyan Bahadur Shrestha and Rakesh Ranjit with a cash prize of Rs 11,000 each. Jagadamba Industries Pvt Ltd, Bara sponsored the cash reward, said the chief coach of weightlifting.



Men´s Kabaddi



Central Region lifted the title of men´s kabaddi in the Sixth National Games on Thursday in Mahendranagar. Central Region thrashed Far-western Region 45-11 in the final, while Western Region and Nepal Police Club claimed bronze medals in the event.



Men´s Volleyball



Nepal Police Club will face Western Region in the semifinal of men´s volleyball while Armed Police Force (APF) will take on PLA Sports Club in another semifinal.



NPC defeated PLA 25-22, 25-10, 26-24 on Thursday to top Group A. Despite losing the match, PLA reached the semifinals as the runner-up of Group A.



APF edged past Far-western Region 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 in a Group B match. Western Region pulled off a 25-13, 25-20, 26-28, 25-23 over the host. Likewise, Eastern Region defeated Mid-western Region 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.



Taekwondo



Ayasha Shakya of Central Region on Thursday suffered a shock defeat to Riki Maden of Eastern Region in the women´s third-dan poomse event. Maden accumulated 74.50 points whereas Shakya earned only 73.33.



Birubhai Bajracharya of Mid-western Region won gold with 73.80 points in the men´s third-dan poomse while Suresh Manandhar of Central Region settled for silver with 71.33 points.



Likewise, Suman Paudel of Western Region and Som Maya Tamang of Central Region won gold in the men´s first and second dan poomse and women´s first and second dan poomse respectively.



NPC and Western Region won golds in the team poomse of men´s and women´s sections respectively.



Hockey



Central Region was awarded three points in the round-robin league of hockey on Thursday as Nepal Hockey Association suspended Mid-western Region for walking out of the match on Wednesday. Mid-western Region had walked out on Wednesday after the referee awarded a penalty stroke to Far-western Region. With the three points, Central Region now has nine points from three matches. Far-western Region has seven points from three matches.



The last league match between Central Region and Far-western Region on Friday will decide the gold medalist. Far-western must win the match to claim gold while a draw would be sufficient for Central. Meanwhile, the match between Eastern Region and Western Region ended in a goalless draw.







Chess



Niraj Niraula of Eastern Region leads the chess competition at the Sixth National Games after the completion of the sixth round on Thursday. Niraula has five points after playing draws with FIDE Master Manish Hamal in the fifth round and Prachanda Malakar in the sixth. Hamal, Malakar, Keshav Shrestha of APF and U-19 Nepal champion Rupesh Jaiswal share the second spot with 4.5 points. The competition will end on Friday.



Table Tennis



Nepal Police Club won two more gold medals in table tennis on Thursday in Mahendranagar. Police clinched gold in women´s doubles and mixed doubles. Earlier, Police had won men´s and women´s team events on Wednesday.



In the women´s doubles final, Nabita Shrestha and Renuka Khatri of NPC edged past club-mates Alina Maharjan and Rabina Desar 11-4, 11-5, 11-6. Selisha Khadgi and Sonu Thapa Magar of APF and Kajol Rauniyar and Manita Chitrakar of Western Region claimed bronze medals.



In an all-NPC mixed doubles final, the pair of Ajay Suwal and Nabita Shrestha outclassed Deep Saun and Renuka Khatri 9-11, 11-3, 11-2, 12-10. Sonu Gupta and Sanisha Shrestha of Central Region and Shiva Sundar Gothe and Sonu Thapa of APF took bronze.


Women´s football



APF will take on Central Region while PLA will face NPC in the semifinals of women´s football.



APF secured its semifinal berth with a 12-1 rout of Far-western Region on Thursday. This is the second time that APF has scored 12 goals in the league round. APF had earlier thrashed Mid-western Region 12-0.



In another match, Sapana Basnet scored the decider as Central Region defeated Eastern Region 1-0.

Meanwhile, PLA hammered Mid-western Region 7-0 and NPC routed Western Region 13-0 to complete the semifinal line-up.


Wushu



Wushu competitions began from Thursday in Mahendranagar. Altogether 132 players -- 86 male and 46 female -- will compete for 22 golds in wushu. Among the 22 golds, 14 are in sansau and eight in thaulo.



On Thursday, Durga Gharti of Mid-western Region defeated Bishnu Bir Chaudhary of Far-western Region in men´s 48 kg. Likewise, Gyan Bahadur Pakhrin of PLA also advanced into the next round.



Chitra Singh Chaudhary (70 kg) of Eastern Region, Tej Bahadur Palli (75 kg) of APF, Dhan Bahadur Thapa (75 kg) of Western Region, Raj Kumar Rai (52 kg) of PLA, Raj Kumar Rasaili (52 kg) of Central Region and Saroj Pun (52 kg) of Mid-western Region also advanced into the next round winning their respective matches.
